One of my favourite pastimes is to visit the theatre to see modern interpretations of classic plays.
This week, we went to see Elektra starring Brie Larson.
But how relevant is an ancient Greek tragedy to events today and in business, you might ask?
The answer can often be, “Quite a lot”, as they explore human emotions and the human condition, which remains still constant after thousands of years.
For example:
🔹 Betrayal and Loyalty: In Elektra, the protagonist grapples with her mother’s betrayal of her father, leading to a quest for justice. Similarly, in business, we may encounter situations where loyalty is tested— you may feel that a key employee or business partner or customer has betrayed you.
How do you handle such betrayals while maintaining integrity?
🔹 Revenge vs. Resolution: The play explores the cycle of revenge, highlighting its destructive potential. In business, seeking revenge might not be the best strategy. Instead, focusing on resolution and growth can lead to better outcomes with your wider network circle.
How do you balance the desire for justice with the need to be seen as a collaborative person who sees a bigger Karma picture?
🔹 Family Ties and Business Bonds: Electra delves into the complexities of family loyalty. In small businesses, especially farms and estates, these dynamics can be just as intricate when family members are involved.
How do you manage these relationships to ensure they support, rather than hinder, your business goals?
🔹 Grief, Mourning, and Adaptation: Elektra’s grief serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging setbacks. In business, we must learn to mourn our failures and adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
How do you foster a culture of resilience within yourself and your team?
What do you think – Sophocles and co are still relevant today, or this article is written by some nutter who is stretching the point? 🙃
